March 25th is a big holiday for the Hellenes. It marks Greek Independence Day. The Greek Community of Oshawa and District is writing to ask that the month of March be designated as Hellenic History month. Your proclamation this year help mark the month and the events we held were a big success.

Depending on who you talk to, people have different beliefs concerning the evil eye. Some people believe that it isn’t simply negative emotions that can cause the evil eye to another. Even something simple, such as admiring a newborn baby, could result in the curse. In some parts of Greece, it is believed those with blue or green eyes are particularly able to give the curse to another person, which is a major reason why the evil eye talismans, or the "mati" symbols, are depicted as a blue eye.
The common term for this day, "Clean Monday", refers to the leaving behind of sinful attitudes and non-fasting foods.
Clean Monday (Greek: Καθαρά Δευτέρα), also known as Pure Monday, Ash Monday, Monday of Lent or Green Monday, is the first day of Great Lent throughout Eastern Christianity and is a moveable feast, falling on the 7th Monday before Pascha (Easter).
